Business Development Manager – Freight Forwarding

(Monday – Friday 08.00-17.00 but must be flexible)

As a deep-water cargo terminal close to the main shipping channels, Portico is ideally positioned to handle goods from ship to shore and beyond. Located within Portsmouth International Port with direct access to the national motorway network, we’re the first choice for customers looking for an efficient and cost-effective cargo handling and stevedore service. Fresh produce is our core business, but we handle a diverse range of other cargoes including wind blades, containers, high & heavy, project cargoes and Agri bulks.

Portico have an opportunity for an experienced and self-motivated person to join the organisation as Business Development Manager – Freight Forwarding, to manage the start to finish process of the clients forwarding needs.

The successful candidate will have worked for a Freight Forwarder and will have working experience within Key Accounts Management or Operations. The salary is £45K – £55K basic depending on experience and the level of business that will follow them. There is a generous commission-based bonus scheme plus company car.

This role will involve building up sales pipeline, tracking and managing the complete sales process end to end, from opportunity qualification to closure of new business. Communicating with in/outbound leads via multiple channels, collaborating closely with the members of the inside team on finding ways to improve team performance and exceed sales targets. Securing new business to meet or exceed the monetary/volume targets set. Making accurate, rapid cost calculations and providing customers with quotations.

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate previous achievements in the following areas:


  • A minimum of 3 years field sales experience, within the Freight Forwarding sector
  • Experience in road, sea and air freight operations
  • An established customer portfolio that will come with them
  • Client-facing experience
  • Strong commercial judgement
  • Ability to generate new leads, form good relationships and effectively close deals
  • Possess a determined and results orientated attitude
  • Able to work under pressure and to tight deadlines
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and negotiation skills
