About us

While we’re famous for bananas, there’s more to us under the skin.

We’re owned by Portsmouth City Council, who bought the company in 2008. We’ve transformed from a primarily fruit business, into a multi-million cargo handling operation, and are the home port for Maersk South America.

Governed by a board of six directors, including council, Portico, and elected officials, we’re also supported by a strong independent senior management team.

We have over 170 staff, ranging from crane drivers, customer account handlers, warehouse and container operatives, quayside staff, health and safety, HR and facilities.

Steve Williams

Operations Director and General Manager

Spent over 30 years in the shipping industry, working in senior management positions for Britain’s major ports. Steve’s role is making sure Portico stays on track to fulfil its potential in the cargo and logistics business.

Benjamin Harraway

Commercial Manager and Deputy General Manager

Responsible for our commercial operations, Ben is the main point of contact for new and existing contracts and customer development.

He is a member of the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers, and has a proficient understanding of maritime industry issues and trends, following 10 years’ experience involving vessel operations and port management.

Mike Lane

Finance Director and Company Secretary

Our finances are in safe hands with Mike, he has over 30 years in the logistics industry, working in senior management positions for major global businesses including 10 years with P&O and nine years in the Middle East. Mike’s current role is making sure Portico adheres to its financial targets and makes the most of its competitive advantages.

Daphne Coomber

Customs agency manager

Over 30 years’ experience within the customs, freight and logistics industry. Responsible for managing all HMRC requirements, ensuring cargo leaves the port quickly and efficiently as possible, while maintaining excellent customer satisfaction.
